Russia Tour – 2018

Introduction
1. We have family in England and are always looking for different ways to get there from Australia.
2. 2. Russia has a long and interesting history going back to the 9th Century some of which can still be observed. In particular people are still alive who lived through the latest traumatic era of Russian history – the collapse of the Soviet Union. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Russia
3. Russia is the crossroads of East and West – Asia and Europe. This fusion can be seen in Russian culture, architecture and art. Getting to Russia
Russia has quite stringent requirements for the application of a visa, including listing the countries that have been visited in the last 10 years, noting the last two educational institutions and the last two jobs including supervisors. Happily our travel agent, Christine Klein of Travel Counsellors (christine.klein@email.travelcounsellors.com.au) organized that process.

We do not like long haul travel so we stayed in Singapore for two days before flying to Moscow via Munich. Even so that was a long trip.

Although our plan was to for a river cruise from Moscow to St Petersburg, we arrived in Moscow five days earlier that the start of the river cruise and did a tour of Moscow called the “Mood of Moscow” (MoM) by On The Go Tours. https://www.onthegotours.com/uk/Russia/Mood-for-Moscow-4-days/trip-notes. Although this tour overlapped with excursions off the trip there were advantages in doing this tour first.

We arrived in Moscow 24 hours before the tour started which gave us time to recover from our travelling. The hotel was booked by On The Go Tours. It was part of a complex of four large hotels: Izmailovo Delta Hotel. The hotel was comfortable and well organized with many eateries in the hotel and nearby. One advantage of MoM was that most of the travel was on the fabulous Moscow Underground Railway system. The trains arrive regularly at stations, are fast and have an excellent notice system on trains that indicate where on the line the train currently is. One highlight was visiting some of the iconic railway stations. The touring from the cruise ship also covered some of these stations but MoM was more comprehensive. The stations are decorated with mosaics, chandeliers, and stained glass.
Here are a few photos of these stations.
